Not everyone finds it helpful to be told to relax or take a deep breath when they are experiencing times of stress. Especially those who have experienced trauma, where those suggestions might be triggers for them. As an alternative, I love this grounding exercise that can fit in really well into anyone's mindfulness practice.
This is a great option for those who need to feel present and aware of their surroundings in order to feel safe and secure.
